Route 20 Bridge over the Quaboag River
MassDOT
OWNER

VALUE
Monson – Palmer, MA
LOCATION
This bridge replacement consisted of the full removal and disposal of the existing superstructure and substructure, replacement with new concrete cantilever abutments and wingwalls, welded steel plate girders, concrete deck slabs and sidewalks, S3-TL4 bridge rails, concrete approach slabs, and precast concrete guardrail transitions. The construction of this bridge required significant support of excavation along with the installation of cofferdams for water control.
MAS worked with WSP and MassDOT to eliminate a center construction phase, expediting construction and improving safety.
Beyond the bridge, the roadway improvements included construction of a stormwater drainage swale, new drainage systems along the bridge approaches, MSE reinforced stone gabion wingwall extensions, new approach guardrail, sidewalks, and full depth roadway construction. Landscaping included loam, seed, and other plantings. Placement of riprap slope protection was infilled with composted mulch.
As this project was phased, to maintain traffic on Route 20, temporary traffic controls were implemented, including temporary sidewalks, metal barriers, drums, striping, traffic signs, etc.
